Film School

Storytelling as a tool for creative self expression in an SEMH school.

We found a way to engage and support young people by encouraging Storytelling and creativity as a wonderful way to express unconscious expression. I have used some of the psychodynamic theory and concepts and applied them to a variety of creative arts workshops within and SEMH school in Jersey.

  1. Characters, scripts and visuals can project hidden fears, hopes and conflicts.

  2. Storytelling externalises our inner worlds safely.

  3. The structure of ‘a script’ is containing, the editing, shooting, editing and screening all follow a structure which is experienced as containing the story.

  4. Collaborative filmmaking builds peer relationships and provides a safe way to explore power, leadership and belonging.

  5. Observing reflecting and noticing relational dynamics

  6. Playing roles, acting out scenes and creating alternative endings all allow for experimentation and identity.
